Asian Fusion grooming: what it is and why dog owners love it
Big round heads, fluffy legs and playful, creative shapes. Asian Fusion is one of my specialities and something I teach to other groomers, so here's my guide to this gorgeous style.

Asian Fusion is one of the most creative styles in dog grooming, and it's one of my absolute favourite things to do. I specialise in Asian Fusion styling at my salon in Little Totham, and I also teach it to other groomers at practical grooming seminars.
What is Asian Fusion grooming?
Asian Fusion is a style of grooming that grew in popularity in countries like Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Rather than following traditional breed standards, it's all about creating cute, playful, exaggerated shapes that bring out your dog's personality. Think soft, rounded and full of character.
Common features include:
- A big, round head and face
- Round or shaped ears that frame the face
- A shorter, neat body
- Full, fluffy legs, often in a cylinder or bell bottom shape
- A rounded muzzle and short, soft features
The real skill is in the balance. Every Asian Fusion groom is designed around the individual dog, their face, their structure and their coat, so no two looks are ever the same.
Is it the same as a teddy bear trim?
They're related, but not the same. A teddy bear trim is a soft, rounded, everyday style. Asian Fusion takes those rounded shapes further, with more exaggerated proportions, more detailed scissor work and more creative freedom. If you love the teddy look and want something a little more special, Asian Fusion could be for you.
Which dogs suit Asian Fusion?
Dogs with curly, dense or fluffy coats that hold a scissored shape suit it best, including:
- Poodles of every size
- Bichons
- Cockapoos, cavapoos and other doodles
- Pomeranians
- Maltese, shih tzus and Yorkshire terriers
What goes into an Asian Fusion groom
Asian Fusion relies on advanced scissoring skills. After a bath and conditioning, the coat is fully fluff dried so it's straight and even, then the shapes are carefully scissored by hand. Getting the head and legs balanced takes time and precision, and it's the part I love most.
Groomer's tip: send me a photo of your dog and a few looks you love. We can then design a style that suits your dog's face and coat.
Is Asian Fusion right for my dog?
A few things help an Asian Fusion style look its best:
- A healthy, tangle free coat with enough length to shape. If your dog is matted, their coat will have to be clipped short first, then we can grow it back into the style you'd like.
- Brushing at home every couple of days to keep those fluffy shapes tangle free.
- Regular grooms every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the shape crisp.
Every dog is different, so I tailor the grooming process to your dog. If your dog is nervous or new to grooming, we can build up to a fuller style over a few visits.
